Actually no. Geneology is important becuase we belive there are certain ordinances that are a neccesary part of returning to live with our Heavenly Father. We do geneology so that we can identify the work that has not been done for relatives who didn't have a chance to particpate themselves, or didn't hear about the gospel while they were living, and can have those ordinances done by proxy.

LDS are into genealogy because they believe that only certain people
