Yeah, that's it exactly. Where I work, it happens a lot with cameras--"I just bought this, and it stopped working, I need to exchange it!" Without a receipt, of course. After some questioning, the truth comes out: The camera was bought six months to a year ago and has been dropped numerous times, yet the customer thinks he/she is entitled to a free replacement.
One of my favorites--a guy brought in a camera with the receipt, but it was purchased eight months ago. When I explained the return policy (you have thirty days to return it, after which you either deal with the manufacturer or you just eat it), he looked down his nose at me and said, "So, you're saying you don't stand by your product?"
Without missing a beat, I said, "Yes, we do--for thirty days."

In retail, I've met this kind! Buy the snow-blower, get rid of the snow, then return it. 'Well It is not working as I hoped it would! I had to borrow the neighbor's'!
