TAPS
I know (lol) that in everyday usage ‘knowing’ and ‘believing’ are pretty well interchangeable. But sometimes, in the interests of clarity, it is necessary to be a little more rigorous and make a distinction between the two which is ultimately grounded in our scientific tradition. Of course, the ‘boundary’ is not rigid, but I’m sure you’d agree that it makes more sense to speak of ‘scientific knowledge’ than ‘scientific belief’.
Without taking a huge detour into Philosophy of Science, I would nonetheless suggest that you might want to read a couple of my posts on these issues. The first one is here http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/Nautikos/381308, and the second one follows that one immediately.

Perhaps it is important for you to distinguish in that way between the words "know" and "believe". In "real" usage, they are pretty much interchangeable. For instance, you might get a kick out of something that Donald Rumsfield said once,
"As we know, there are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say,we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know." LOL One dictionary definition that I like is,
"Know - understand at this moment."

Didn't I already tell you in my Bible and Koran series that it was (allegedly) the Angel Gabriel who spoke to Mohammed? You mean you weren't paying attention?
Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about Gabriel, he really isn't important, aside from the fact that there really ain't such personage! But we shall be getting into that stuff again in due course...
By the way, excellent idea, reading the Koran! Everybody should...

Myth is good .... unlike Math (now that's downright scary!)
P.S.

Myth is reality, reality is myth. Myth is not a 'veil' that 'hides' reality, or God, or anything. There are just different forms of myth. And when you tell me you
know, then I ask you for proof. But when you tell me you
believe, there is not much more to be said...

I am fascinated with your posts.....and with the comments.....and mainly find myself wondering at what sparked your interest, and at what point in your life, what your religious heritage was, what the development of thought was, etc. I don't expect you to reveal this info to me.....I'm just sharing that this is the way my brain/thought pattern works when I read your posts......as it does when I read the Bible; I'm usually more interested in what was behind the man who wrote the translation/words, etc...... Anyway, great work...thanks for sharing.

Well done old chap and you do keep me thinking. I like what TAPS commented as well and I do have the experience of rather a more personal God who really has controlled my life for the past 40 years anyway.
I am always shocked at some of the things I learn or read about here, and there, and it sends me on little skirmishes to glean more information I don't quite know what to do with.
For instance I did go out and buy a copy of a translation of the Koran~ (N.J.Darwood/Translator)~and I did that as the result of reading you my friend.
Now I am shocked to discover that it was the Angel Gabriel who appeared to Muhammad and influenced him, and here now the Koran says the Jews and the Christians corrupted the scriptures and all have to get back on the right path.
Sure now I'm just disgusted with Gabriel and I'll have to hunt down more information on him~or maybe you'll do a post on him~ because here I had been thinkin' Gabriel was Irish and all and now I find out what he's gone and done.
Great posts you write old buddy and now I'm trying to find time to be a better student.

You write in such an interesting and believable way that you could almost persuade any reader to accept what they know to be real, as myth.

But, when God makes himself known through the power of his spirit, the gauzy curtain of myths is ripped away, never to return.
