I'm glad you enjoyed "Thursdays With Death." I hope book two is as good as the first.

Hi sannhet
I liked that 'veil', as also others, and particularly, "If you hold your breath while you drive by a cemetery, evil spirits can't enter your body". I loved your "Thursdaya With Death". Waiting for your second edition.

sannhet, a most interesting and somewhat scary list..the one about
resting a broom against a bed kind of jumped out at me....I have the habit of resting the broom while I'm sweeping just about anywhere and against anything, including beds...

There are so many of these superstitions around that one could write an entire book on just them!

From the research I've done, the concept of the veil came about as a way to protect the wife of the deceased as well as those who may come into contact with her. It was thought that a widow would have "death vibrations and spirit" around her. The veil was used so that Death could not recognize her. It also kept those that came into contact with her from seeing her eyes directly. If they did, it was believed, they would soon die as well.

The idea of covering mirrors in the house where a dead person lay was to keep others from dying as well. It was believed that looking into a mirror in the house of a dead person would cause death of the one who looked in the mirror.

In the Caribbean, there are many of these sayings, and many cows! Guess I am missing out on the Obits from there!

I was interested in where the "veil" tradition came from.  I've also heard that you should cover all the mirrors in your house after a death.  Have you heard of that one or why it's done?
