I no longer watch award shows. They bore me.

It was just something I ran across.

I like Griffin myself.  She's nothing special, but she's not bad.

Well Gomedome, we'll just have to disagree on that
I really don't feel at all that 'suck it' is that big of a deal.

I know with my boys if we don't make a big deal over such things, they really don't pick them up.  The way it was said neither of my boys would have noticed it at all.  From what I have seen most of the language issues come from parenting and not what they hear on TV.  'Suck it' really would be meaningless to most kids and unless repeated constantly around them, I doubt they would repeat the phrase themselves.

I must be the only person on the planet that did not watch the emmy's or

hear about this speech.  She has a right to her opinion.

So do I.  Kathy Griffin is a crappy comedienne anyway.

kooka_lives - yes, I caught all of that but nothing changes the fact that

the term is a sexual derivative.

There are subtle effects on society as a whole that come from normalizing to common vernacular, terms that are sexually explicit derivatives. Not to mention the ongoing incremental desensitization of our outrage towards the use of such terms. I know that I wouldn't want my children talking that way.

We've reached the stage where 'suck it' really is not the harshest thing you'll hear on TV. As she explained on Larry King, she had made the joke about how everyone can 'suck it' on her special.  Once you see what she is trying to get across with that phrase, it really is less offensive and has something of value to say.

I agree with the simple concept that everyone can 'suck it', including you and me.  I honestly think such an attitude would be a beneficial thing for more people to have.  Stop worrying about everyone else and their opinions on everything and just do your thing.

kooka_lives - I have a little problem with this type of thing
Where I don't disagree that anyone portraying this as hate or as being motivated by hate is playing the victim card, since when has it been okay to use terms that are sexually explicit derivatives in public? It doesn't matter much how she explains it away, what does she think the term "suck it" means? At the very least it is a crass thing to say at an awards ceremony. I can see where bible thumpers would be offended, albeit most of them for the wrong reasons.
