I think this essay betrays often-made, oversimplified assumptions about the trade debate. Most critics of the disputed trade agreements are not, I believe, opposed to international trade
per se. Rather they oppose the unfair, lopsided conditions under which such trade often takes place, with vulnerable, politically underrepresented workers effectively competing against wildly powerful multinational corporations. Governments, heavily influenced by the corporations, write trade agreements that tend to favor the powerful entities -- often neglecting the interests of workers, consumers and the environment. That some criticism of trade agreements is based on less noble motives does not discredit these formidable objections.
