The trick about learning to type I think is to learn before you need to
use a keyboard. I never completed my typing course because I had to use a typewriter (showing my age)
at work and so I just bashed at the keys and undid all that I had learned. I couldn't get by using only half the alphabet at work until I learnt to type the rest.
I am quite fast I think. At least with a computer I can go back and correct all the errors.

I've done my time
I've worked as a data entry person, and learned to touch type out of sheer necessity. I've done the testing too and can do pretty well in ten key as well. But would I have it as a career choice? No way.

Typing
I always sucked at typing. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get beyond 45 wpm. It got me through college. By then, I had a computer. Keying on a computer feels like a whole different experience to me. I think that is mostly due to the ability to so easily correct errors. I don't have "typing fear" or the frustration at having to retype pages of documents just to move a couple of paragraphs around.
The last time I tested, and I must confess that was years ago, I could do 60 wpm on a computer. I was so proud of that for so long.
