Re: Hmmm???
The circumstances in which torture would be justified would have to be so perfect, so precise, that they are extremely unlikely ever to obtain in real life (the hypothetical scenarios posited by those looking for an excuse to justify torture).
I suppose I might resort to torture to save thousands of lives -- but it would require absolute certainty that we had the right person, and that the methods would produce credible information. Seems to me a clever terrorist would give false information to buy time. In any case, torture is not something for which law enforcement should be given advance immunity.
I think the debate is really between those who would countenance torture under the previously described ideal circumstances, and those (like, apparently, the president) who believe torture (or whatever euphemism they have for it) may be a matter of policy for the executive to decide on unilaterally.

Hmmm???
So you have a person in custody that knows, a nuke is going to go off on Manhattan Island, who has it, and where it is going to be detonated.......and we should not use whatever means available to prevent it? Is that what your saying?
I guess at least we can send them to Eastern Europe and let our friends glean out the answers for us.....
