Bhaskar, I guess it's a "push-pull" kind of thing. I'm lured by the fact that it seems so exotic to an American, at the same time there is some anxiety about your health when you travel anywhaer today, but particularly in places that are, as you say, "teeming";-)

Don't let that one among the many flaws and poor organizational systems deter you from visiting India. No doubt, certain thigs are shamefully bad, but the overall good of its people and colorful culture far overwighs these., teeming masses notwithstanding.
