That instructor is dreaming positive dreams.... not worth a penny in the real world of writing! He should have introduced you to books like.... straight and crooked thinking, the plain words, and language in thought and action. My point is that if you are not a reader, you cannot learn the skills and vocabularies of writing. If you don't know the patterns of argument and of seeing 'what is', then how will you construct your essay to the world. How will you respond to criticism of your works? It all begins with reading!
