I do not know how objective that study is, yet I used to hear that kids who are allowed to run around on the ground and get all dirty develop greater immunity than those who are not so exposed. Maybe there is something to it.

Re: Except for asian cultures, especially Japan, the West was not much into
Saul, the Greeks and especially the Romans were very much concerned with hygiene! Of course, that disappeared during the 'Dark Ages' and beyond...

Except for asian cultures, especially Japan, the West was not much into
hygiene at all until Perry and a few others brought back ritualized bathing and the idea caught on... In America, we take everything to the extreme...

Well, we're of course exposed to all kinds of bacteria anyway, and many of them actually beneficial. What these studies suggest is that indeed we need a certain amount of exposure to certain agents in order to become immune - the problem is always to decide what exactly 'a certain amount' means for practical purposes...

Pat, although I am a city boy, my experience mirrors you own in many ways, since I spent a lot of summers in the country. And I too did not encounter allergies until much later, and don't have any of my own...

Is it this sort of thing that causes the reports to come out 'coffee kills' according to test by ladada and next month 'coffee saves lives' according to test by dododo. I am not believing that for one minute. What about you? Can you think that is true? Is it really saying we should expose ourselves to all sorts of bacteria and we would then become immune?

When I was a poor kid, mom kept a spic n span house, but we kids
were outdoors, through the cow pastures, eating wild blackberries and sheep sorrel in the woods, drinking from the creek. We baked potatoes under campfires, worked picking strawberries in summer, ate some right from the bush. None of us grew up with allergies, asthma, etc... When I moved to the big city I met "dainty" girls at the phone company, who spent a lot of time comparing symptoms, practically lived in the doctor's office. I thought allergies were a status symbol - it must've cost a lot to do all that doctoring.
