no clue as to hooky's origins, but there are quite a few words that when I
repeat them over and over they start sounding weirder and weirder. Weirder is one of them. Even looking at it looks weird. Weird. Weird. weirdweirdweirdweirdweirdweirdweirdweirdweirdweirdweirdweird.

I don't like playing hooky, from school or work.
I like not going in, don't get me wrong, I just feel guilty. What a sucker!

Very endearing....could be a song, letting the kids play hookey just to
spend time with them! That's cool! I like that.
You also made me feel better about my own sleep apnea problem; being haunted by a series of dreams over six months! And you couldn't sleep because of a word getting stuck! Pishaw! I feel much better now.
This is my analytical face.....so, hookey....I would say you created great memories on those days with your children, but maybe it's time to go fishing as well! Sounds good to me!

Good for you, Tattered_Knight
I never called in unless I was really sick. The regular hooky players made it difficult on the rest of us.

Unfortunately not. I am a dedicated worker. The thought has crossed my mind, but I have never acted upon it. Must be the way I was raised

Yes, I think my kids called it that too. Strange how they have so much "lingo" but yet choose something simple like skipping

Right, you are - fish hook = 'hookey.' However (our generation) used 'ditch', like you and yours...

In my country we called it breaking L'ecole biche, probably french terminology. I don't think hockey is related to hooky. It probably is a local word popularized by movies or literature. It was damn good fun though.

Okay.....now, what about nookie? Sorry, couldn't resist!! Seriously, it just came to mind from reading your post.....I love to learn the origins of words and expressions....just the sort of trivia that I seem to recall, when important things slip in one ear and out the other....
sigh....

I am familiar with the term "by hook or by crook" pertaining to the same thing. Never would have thought that it was derived from there. And, You are certainly welcome!

Re: tattered
Hookey" (also spelled "hooky") apparently developed from the colloquial phrase "hooky-crooky" common in the early 19th century, which meant "dishonest or underhanded." The connection between the two phrases becomes clearer when we recall that to "play hookey" properly, one had to pretend to go to school. The child would head out the door at the proper time, schoolbooks in hand, and only when safely out of sight of home would their true itinerary become evident. Of course, the child then often spent the day dreading detection and capture by nearly any grownup, most especially the local Truant Officer.
