I like to leave "sleeper" tips!
I worked as a server all through my school days so I can appreciate how hard it can be. Often times I'll leave a 100% tip after eating at some of my favorite moderate priced restaurants if the service was good. I know it's a nice surprise!

I love this story! My daughter waitressed her way through college and used to love to do this....I never heard the term for it, and think she called them "gratees" (from gratis, I assume). Anyway, it was something she got to feel great about doing.....and, being a people person, she was able to give more than many of her co-workers since she could get the stories. I'd forgotten about them and am so glad your son had his wife had this wonderful surprise to add to the occasion. I also love Melting Pot restaurants and have been to 3 - in Indy, KC and Dallas......of course, I still have my burnt orange fondue pot in the basement from the 70's!!!!

Great story and great place! I'm sure they're doing well, and if I'm ever in your neck of the woods (though I don't know what neck you're in, which might make it a little difficult, lol ), I shall make a point of visiting that establishment...

I think I was happier than they were! I have never heard of anything like that, especially in a high dollar establishment
