Back when I was growing up, it took two strong people to empty the tub, one on each side to grab the handles and carry the thing out the back door where it was emptied into a little ditch that carried the water away. Then, the round, galvanized tin thing was hung on the back of the house until the next time. We didn't get an indoor bathroom until I was 15.
