I know how that is. My dad was in my dreams for many years afterwards
I lost him on May 3, 1982 from stomach cancer. Ever the perpetual student and chemical engineer, he was researching various possible cures and treatments, none of which had gotten to the point of being used like radiation therapy. He was in remission long enough to see and hear me sing in Carnegie Hall (I was just a first tenor in the OSW, which is now The Washington Chorus) in the New York premiere of Penderecki's Te Deum. Then he had a relapse and figured that was enough so he got transferred to a hospital in his beloved Westchester County, New York, and I got to say goodbye one last time there.
He was and is so much a part of my being. He would often come home with some new and, to our family at least, exotic food and I would be the one to try it with him. He would suggest books to read on practically any subject. He remained athletic until the cancer, which had started during his service in WWII in New Guinea with the CWS, took over. Politically, he was an independent, though a registered Republican, interested in populist movements. He had a great sense of humor and a keen mind. I like to think I share his best traits.
He was and is so much a part of my being. I guess that is the best way of thinking of it. Many years later, when the Lion King came out, there was a line that never failed to bring a tear to my eye -- yes, I do get emotional watching movies, even kid's movies -- when Rafiki brings the now adult Simba to a pond to "meet his father", challenging him to really look in the water (at his reflection) and tells him his father is there: "He lives in you."

My dear Sue, I know exactly how you feel
I lost my best friend 3 years ago on the 27th but what keeps me going is the conversation I have with her (mum) all the time and the fact that somehow she still manages to answer and guide me in some way. Brave heart sweetie, although the pain will never entirely leave you it will become bearable. God bless

I am here only to say this
That which your father imparted is his essence as a man and a human being. He left you with a great legacy. And in this tough life, isn't it the better of two sorrows to mourn the one who gave love, rather than never having known it? At least, the memories of one may be bitter-sweet, but the other is more often just bitter. Trust me. I've seen that movie. joab
