Actual written history will not bear out those findings.

We have enjoyed an excellent economy for the most of the country. In fact the best we have known in the past many many years. Middle class people need a little in their pockets. The businesses can't stay in this country if they do not get breaks to pass along to their employees, as in better equipment, safer working conditions all sorts of things come from keeping the money in the pocket of the worker.

Yes I know it was the 16th ammendment. Aren't you preaching to the choir. I know this and this was not what this post is about.

Re: Xeno-X
income tax was firmly established as a constitutional amendment under Woodrow Wilson's Administration -- a "graduated" tax; that is, higher incomes pay higher taxes.  the bulk of taxation before this taxed everyone equally.

Of course, it does seem that the income tax has gotten somewhat out of hand.  Much, I would suppose is from the influence of powerful, monied interests who want the person making $1,000 a year to pay as large a percentage of taxes as those making 60 mil and more.

much of our difficulty arises from big money being too influential.  Big corporations can get out of paying much, if any, tax at all, while the 30k/yr wage earner can pay more than most corporations.

of course -- we also have the old adage:  "you get what you pay for.", which is being demonstrated more and more every day.  We pay less taxes, but our roads are in disrepair and, in order to repair them, more taxes must be raised;  public college tuition has exploded, so the common person has difficulty sending his children through higher education; law enforcement agencies are greatly understaffed due to budget restraints.

so our Republican buddies have lowererd our taxes, but have also provided us with fewer services.  But what the heck, we are living in a "discount" economy anyway.  We pay less and we get less.

I am sorry you did not get to burst my bubble. The post is about income tax not internal taxes which covered the whisky before this. I touched on those taxes, but did not list all the actions this was not a post to cover the total history of American Taxitaion. Please don't be so free with your superior statements they make you look anti-community.

No, this is not what our fore fathers had in mind. I believe we were to be a self reliant people and have NO idea of when this country got the notion that the govt was responsible for our every whim...This is why our taxes are so darn high. People should own up to self responsibility and that darn sure includes the states! Heck people think it is actually up to the govt to insure their way of life.....how stupid is that? Should they be responsible for their own?

As is the case in the US, here in Canada income tax was introduced at the beginning of WWI. And since then the screws have been turned tighter and tighter - our average tax rates on everything are higher than yours. In part it is one huge income re-distribution scheme!

But in spite of all that, the average Canadian is better off in 2007 than he was in 1907...

I have no complaint about there being taxes. I have a lot of questions about the sanity and corrupt management of the money.

I have never begrudged paying my taxes.  I don't always like the way they are used and I feel it is necessary to vote on all those tax spendings.  But, I don't complain about paying them.  (except for cigarettes, LOL)

I agree with that. We have enough junk and pork plus aid to the whole world to pay off the our debt

The Country Ran Well Without Your Tax Dollar For A Long Time
Justi: Before we can cut taxes, we have to reduce spending.  Not just reductions in the rate of increases but actual cuts as in minuses.

While I don't particularly like paying taxes, I realize the way things currently are it's a neccesity. What I don't like is regardless of the political party in power, so much of our tax dollars are wasted.
