I heard from him last night and he has had bronchitis, sinus infection and flu like symptoms, he told me I indeed have the right to know what was wrong, but he has been so sick he said he would try calling tonight. I have been worried

Everyone is different when it comes to showing they care..I am sure this man does care for you...Do you remember my friend last year who dumped me because he was sick? He later died and left his money to the waitresses at a local restaurant? He really did care about me because if he hadn't I would have been devastated by his death had I fallen in love with him..I think you are on the right track.
BUT communication has to be forth right by him as to how he really cares for you...

I am hoping for a good outcome from him. If it is not don't let that bother you either. What you are doing is a very brave, good thing. I would want him to talk to me about how he does this when he comes back. I would want to let him know I don't want to be left holding a bag of confusion. That is only my opinion and how I would handle it not what I think you should or do or should not do.
