So you know, this poem was written when there appeared to be no hope. miracles(and medical science) do happen and my friend is fiesty again

I am sorry....the pain of watching
is a deep hurt indeed. You wish you could take away their pain, but you can do nothing but hold their hand. I think they need someone close, without your hand the pain would win. Sorry truly for you pain and loss.
