Hope is a powerful thing.
Sometimes hope is all we have to hold on to. By reaching out to him as you did, you have already opened the door to a better place for him. With time he will realize that life can and will get better, and the spark that has dimmed will return in all of it's glory. Never underestimate the value of a good friend, he has that in you.
