strat - it's a plague - religious numbnutitis
And I have to agree, our homegrown religious wackos are of far better quality than some of the religious wackos in other religions.

They are everywhere,
fortunately less armed and in far less numbers than, say, Al Quaida.

Talion - things are much the same north of the border, people are people
only the issues are little different.
Where religious issues do not monopolize the collective consciousness, nor exist as an inherent part of political discussion in the same manner as south of the border, we manage to create or own social problems. Where we escape the "manifest destiny" mentality to some degree, we do not escape the penchant to be pre-occupied with trivial social issues. The people I am speaking of in this post are a society within a society. All of their children have suffered industrial duty brainwashing to a degree where they are incapable of speaking without throwing in a few references to God. They all go to Christian schools, primary, secondary and post secondary. Their entire social lives are structured around their religion and what a religion it is; 20 years ago they broke away from a branch of the United church which had broken away from another branch, which had broken away from another church and so on. They promote hatred towards the usual groups, immoral gays, immoral atheists and immoral adherants to other religions. Their little obscure cult are the only ones who have it right according to them and the entire world will eventually see the light as they do. . . in a word they are insufferable.

Unless the group completely segregates themselves from the rest of society in some sort of commune or something, I doubt a group could escape from outside influences. They simply ignore it, consider it an attack on their ideals (which results in a circling of the wagons and/or possibly "retaliation"), twist it to reaffirm their perspectives, or all of the above. The same can be said about the other hot-button topic, politics. I don't know how things are north of the border, but here in the race-obsessed U. S. of A., we can apply the same logic (or lack thereof) to matters of ethnicity. What's really astounding is when individuals fuse all three of these factors, religion, race, and politics, into one unflinching, unquestioning self-image.
