sannhet -very well put, fear is the premise upon which negative stereotypes
are built and proliferated.
With religious belief we can add the aspect of elevating one philosophy over another as a means of both selling the philosophy and for the individual to self reaffirm.

Whysper - I don't question anyone's stand on belief either but you can
always count on some of them offering such information.
As I mention in this post, all of the atheists I have known in life were/are honest and honourable people as well, this cannot just be a coincidence. It would be unfair to say that all of the scumbags I have met in life are believers but they sure are well represented amongst this group.

Gome -
Unfortunately, stereotypes exist. They are most prevelent in arenas where fear is a guiding concept. Since many Christian denominations utilize fear to control, then there is a fertile breeding ground for stereotypes.

I treat non-theistst the same as theists
They can believe (or not belive) anything they want and I will treat them all alike. I no longer immediatly question someone's stand on the invisible friend. The so called atheists that I have known were all honest honorable people, I cann't say that about people I've know from the judeochristian pool.
