Problem solved
I feel so foolish sometimes. I went into the control panel and pulled up the mouse, found the fingerpad device and disabled it. so simple and now life is wonderful.

I have a newer HP laptop and there is a little button right on the top of the pad in the middle that turns it off and on. It's on if you see the little blue light to the left of it on and off if it's red. Maybe you computer does too.. I hope.. maybe.....
