It is now two years + since I posted this. I can say that, when comparing the disaggregated school data (6th, 7th, 8th, White, Black, Hispanic, Special Ed., ESL) required by NCLB, the one year that I taught 8th grade math, 8th grade over-all scores for math were nine percent higher that the three years before, or the two years since. Hmm.
Research is right. You bring up the bottom 20% of the school if you want to improve your schoolwide averages.
