Love doesn't exist on two ends of a spectrum.
If you love someone you love something or somethings about them.
People will love you and like you. Love is not the best of the two. Love is too strongly associated with self-sacrifice. Self-sacrifice is considered acceptable and good, so people use it as an excuse to care about people who don't care back, or who are downright cruel. Likeing a person implies more mutual affection. You like people who you can put up with, who entertain you, who can put up with you.
