I have no problems with opposing thoughts. No atheist I know of does. But when everywhere you turn there are believers who seem to feel that they have more rights than anyone else when it comes to religious freedom, there is a problem. Seriously, right now in this country Christian beliefs are forced on everyone and if we try to get that changed we are told we are be hateful towards Christians or that we are just trying to oppress their beliefs, when all we want is to feel that our freedoms are being maintained..
Find for me a believer here on Blogit who 'welcomes dissent and loves the dissenter'. I have been blocked by believers when I have pointed out that what hey have posted was wrong. I'm not talking about faith related issues, but misinformation that has been proven to be lies, such as the lies about Halloween. Things that I have shown them to be wrong that are backed up by facts. I was polite and did nothing at all to insult them, but I got blocked. I've had believers here claim that I was harassing or attacking them when all I did was say that I felt they were wrong and told them so as politely as could be. One time I got bitched out by a believer for telling her that she has every right to her beliefs after stating my own on the subject. Go and find for me an atheist or agnostic here who does any such things.
Sorry, but all evidence points to it being the non-believers who are more leaky to listen to views outside of their own.
The problem with anyone like Falwell is that they very much look to be con-men. They use religion to get people to give them money and they get rich off of it. Just because the man claims to be a good old Christian boy, does not mean he was. I know of some believers who very much disliked Falwell and felt him to be a criminal. Do they hate anyone who believes in God as well?
I have no fear of belief in God. I do fear for the future if we allow one religious group to have such dominance over our society. But that is not paranoia, since we have already seen time and time the problem that come from this happening.
Go read my post here if you actually handle dissent.

Re: Writer
Kooka opined, "I have yet to meet one single atheist who hates people just because they believe in God. They hate that religious ideas are being forced on them in a society that is suppose to be about religious freedom."
Pardon me, but that smacks of paranoia. How is it then that atheists like Hitchens hate being presented with ideas with which they disagree, while a believer who is the least bit secure in his or her faith welcomes dissent and loves the dissenter?
The answer is this: Truth has nothing to fear from error, but error dreads the truth. Hating opposing thought and reacting to it in paranoid fashion ("being forced in them") as you say atheists do is the stuff of fear.

If you think someone is a criminal and you are upset because said person got away with all kinds of crime, is that wrong? Just because someone claims to believe in your religion, they must be good and righteous, even if all they seem to do is find ways to get rich off of people of your faith. It matter not that they show themselves to lack a certain level of morals and integrity, they are of your faith and so must be better than those who are not of your faith.
You obviously have no clue what hate actually is. I just wrote a post that seems to have been written for you, even though I had not read your post here yet when the inspiration hit me.

Thanks, Wavy!
Point proven. (Gee, I thought atheists were supposed to be so gentle and kind in contrast to those evil Christians . . . )

WriterOfLight: Hitchens is definitely full of hate towards Falwell. Why? Because Hitchens is an atheist. He hates anyone who believes in God.
