I think the candidate you referred to...
...who believed the U.S. invited the terrorist attack was Ron Paul. He is from the isolationist wing of his party, not the establishment. This faction believes, along with many on the left, that America's military involvement in the Middle East fuels terrorism rather than stopping it.

That's politics
I don't think that I've ever been excited about an election or its candidates since the day I came of age to vote. It always felt to me like I was picking between the lesser of two evils, none of the candidates in any election I've ever voted in have offered even 50% of my views and beliefs and the ones that came close were just lying to get my vote. As a rule I avoid political debates since they tend to feel more like popularity contests then anything else. I am not surprised that none of the current candidates stand out as anything special, this is just the breed of politician that we are currently producing in our country and if you ask me it spells a lot of trouble in the near future.
