That's certainly a strong possibility, hikarushinju.

evasive eyes might signify disrupted thoughts

This isn't so much about "shifty" eyes, Pat B ...
but evasive ones.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 11, 2007 at 12:19 PM | link to this | reply

In some cultures and subsets of this one, it's considered
rude to look someone in the eye. I have found the shifty eyes generally mean someone is lying, when this cultural thing isn't involved.

It too often works out that way, afinscore.

I was afriad the cure would be worse

And the cool thing about that bumper sticker, riri ...
Is that it applies to human babies as well.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 10, 2007 at 9:08 PM | link to this | reply

Not sure, johnmacnab ...
But I'm guessing nothing good.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 10, 2007 at 9:06 PM | link to this | reply

It can be, actually, afinscore ...

However, unfortunately, the cure is worse than the affliction.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 10, 2007 at 9:05 PM | link to this | reply

interesting, very very interesting...

Thank you for recommending shelters and not breeders.

There is a bumper sticker that sums it up quite nicely

Don't Shop!!!

Madamoiselle
What would it mean if you were avoiding your own eyes as you looked in a mirror?

posted by johnmacnab on May 10, 2007 at 8:08 PM | link to this | reply

That shifty eyed thing can it be cured?

posted by afinscore on May 10, 2007 at 5:28 PM | link to this | reply

I think some people might be giving this a little too much thought, YPunday.

Although, I must confess, I usually avoid eye contact with those afflicted by Down's Syndrome. I find them to be wildly unpredictable, and thus they make me extremely nervous.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 10, 2007 at 1:54 PM | link to this | reply

Hi Madem (brought flowers).Disabled students also avoid eye contact; what

does this say about those with disabilities? Howard Gardner said we have multiple intelligences; last month a student who has down syndrome won a contest for art among Maryland high schools (& I chose the judges so they did not know about her condition, neither did I). Now, chokecherry aka Bird Cherry is native to most USA and Canada, although there are a few different varieites: Prunus Virginiana, Prunus Demissa ...shalomfromneil

Littlemspickles, the answer to your question is ...

yes.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 10, 2007 at 6:06 AM | link to this | reply

i don't know about this one...
what about cultural factors too...in some cultures it is rude to look straight at the person you are speaking to. Are we then to imply that mental illness is rampant in certain sections of the community?

I'm too concerned how I might respond to heckling, Rcky.
I'm afraid I might go all "Kramer" on the crowd, and start, like, ripping "the Jews" or something.

Hahaha Madame...Have you every considerd standup?

posted by RckyMtnActivist on May 10, 2007 at 5:23 AM | link to this | reply

Apparently, Rcky.

And I bet their "shifty eyes" must make them extremely difficult to read when playing them in Poker.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 10, 2007 at 5:22 AM | link to this | reply

I think we can safely assume, Corbin, that that would qualify as a definite sign of severe dementia.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 10, 2007 at 5:20 AM | link to this | reply

Hmmmmm.. Madame....Do mentally ill people have something to hide?

posted by RckyMtnActivist on May 10, 2007 at 5:08 AM | link to this | reply

I have always wondered why you never make eye contact with me????
Especially when I am talking to you........wait, you can't see me, nrr I you.......I'm not talking, it's a computer keyboard.........NEVER MIND!!!!!!

I've actually been there, and done that, Trisha.

Well, one is mentally ill
and one is lying.  Can't remember which, but imagine the conversation!

Judge Judy was on "Idol" yesterday, TAPS ...

In a very bizarre sequence, in which she appeared to be hitting on Simon Cowell.

And possibly drunk.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 9, 2007 at 10:31 PM | link to this | reply

mademoiselle
There are sure a lot of mentally ill people then in Judge Judy's court.  She is always yelling at someone to look into her eyes instead of everywhere else.

Yeah, that's the main one, Enigmatic.

That's funny, T.

That's what I was afraid of, Sunny.

Two guys share a room in a mental hospital.
One of them tells the doctor, "Jeez, I think my roommate is crazy. He thinks he is a lamp!" The doctor thinks to himself, "Hm, so he can tell his roommate is insane, this must mean his mental illness is cured!" The doctor then proceeds to tell him the good news that he will be release very shortly. The man sits there for a moment, and says, "Wait, but then I won't a lamp anymore!"
