I stood in the church alone one day, in the beauty of the chapel with its stained glass windows depicting various biblical scenes, its arched ceilings, red carpets and upholstered benches, carved wooden structures and treasured hymnals, and I stared at the single flame upon the altar. In its beauty and tranquility it glowed beneath the image of the Good Shepherd holding out his arms in loving welcome. It was the eternal flame, glowing warmly behind red glass. I stood in the holiness of the place without fear and felt the infinite nature of God's love in that room. One person, one eternal flame, and one ancient book of knowledge that begins in calling me a sister to the Kings and the Queens of the world, a child of God.
And being a spoiled child, I went about my way without giving these things serious consideration in my own life. I had only to complain once, and I was cast from the presence of that infinite love and thrown into a torrential storm of uncertainty that lasted until my only true grip on life was in becoming a mother. Now I realize I cannot give my soul to a candle and a picture on glass. I can only learn to be that good shepherd, for I was told in the University that God is dead. The concept remains, and it is a literal concept. Your guinea pig needs your lifelong support.
