My father had a sixth grade and hard knocks education; my mother did
12 and out. Both told me and my brother that we were going to college. My father told me that his sons would get the education he didn't. My mother also stressed the need for education. I'm from the southern coalfields of West Virginia, where the people are poor and traditionally ill-educated, but proud and wanting better for their children. Everyone talked about children getting a good education when I was a child.
Now, all you hear is why, how come, what for, what good is it, and can I sue. I totally agree with you, Q. Lewis. The support system is nearly nonexistent. Instead of looking for scapegoats, people need to look at themselves. The first step to a good education is making sure the student doesn't trip coming out of his own front door...
