I can't send you email for some reason. I'll try to paste the content of my last attempt here.
I work in HMRC department - Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs, in the UK. I've only worked in indirect taxes such as VAT - like your sales tax - and duties, such as those on tobacco and alcohol, and currently, duty on gas and diesel for road fuel. I've also worked in environmental taxes. A tax on quarrying was one I worked on till about a year ago. So i wouldn't be much help to your American listeners, I don't suppose!!
