I know McLuhan's writings, and I also had the good fortune to attend some of his lectures, which is why feel I may be forgiven if I insist that we get his name right...

Re: How hard is it to make friends with your neighbour
JKstar88, nice meeting you. I'm afraid society is changing to exclude neighborliness in all but the best areas.

How hard is it to make friends with your neighbour
Growing up, I used to hang out with a bunch of other kids in the neighbourhood and i never really had interest spending my days locked inside just being by myself, but the more time I spent at school learning by route and doing individual exercises, I began to be less outgoing.

It might also have to do with language and cultural issues, since my parents are first generation immigrants from China, but it was also in elementary school that we were first exposed to computers and there was never really any time for free discussion/dialogue.

It was a real relief to get to college and realize you can form relationships with people. You can go up to strangers and start asking questions.

I'm in journalism and broadcasting, which actually has helped me to be a better communicator in one-on-one discussions whether in personal or professional life, but I still don't know my neighbours.

I have gone door-to-door conducting surveys and fundraising, but there always seems to be a potential for meeting rapists, thieves and murderers

How do you keep yourself, your kids, your family safe in a world that seems full of danger

I know my parents never really got over the Paul Bernardo-Karla Hamolka case here in Canada, since I am always warned about the dangers of working or partying late.

I'm 25, I drink occassionally and I don't do drugs.

As a citizen in a free society where the government's supposed to look after the interests and safety of the people, I don't believe in cowering in the dark and afraid of talking to your neighbours.

(If I actually get killed, I hope it's fast and quick so I can move on to my next life

I can be reduced to particles flung into the breeze or maybe I'll come back and haunt that person for all eternity)

Re: kingme
FoliageGold, your uncle was the first and only media guru, until Neil Postman, who was his student. Postman who passed in 2003, co-authored my bible, TEACHING AS A SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITY, and founded a media department at NYCC. Fabulous knowing you! You must have tales to tell!

Bless your heart to remember Uncle Marshall!  Goodness gracious, didn't think anyone remembered him any more.  I remember walking with him in SASK as a small child (me) and he pointed at the hydro poles (don't listen Wiley) and telling me how the whole world would one day be connected.  I hadn't a clue what he was talking about as I struggled with the whole idea of picking up that black thing plopped in the kitchen and being able to hear my friend Cynthia's voice!  Years after his death, I worked in professional theatre at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa and a play called, "Marshall McLuan --The Musical" was mounted.......  I'll never forget the day I was helping paint props and had slopped paint all over the floor....  I had to mop it up off the tile and while I did so, the cast belted out a song from the production, it was called, "Don't Let the B*astards Get You Down!"    I'll never forget it!  Bless you for remembering my uncle!  Lord have Mercy, wonders never cease..........  --Mary

Ive just decided yesterday to use the whole journal, reading and writing
thing to help my 14 and 11 year old to process their worlds and improve their language skills.  I was an English First and second language teacher in South Africa for 18 years.  I'm now semi-retired ,not because I want to be, but I live in New Zealand and do substitute teaching.  Its not half as satisfying as being in the classroom.

This is excellent. Could I copy this and send it to my daughters? One is a teacher and the other is a mother of a little boy who is going 90 to nothing all the time.

You, sir, are gifted with seeing what is real. Most people wander through
the world either in denial or in some dream-fog of what was or will be, making the present just bothersome.  You, however, see it as it is -- the point we have arrived at (however and whichever varied ways that may have come about) and must negotiate and utilize effectively to ensure a better future.  I like your writing idea.  Not only is it positively reinforcing and a potential de-stresser, it adds a concreteness to your students' lives that only a written record can give.
