Maj, Yes, the Smithsonian (during this administration)
has headed farther down the slippery slope of commercialization and privatization than ever before...I think I wrote about the Showtime Network debacle earlier...

Cynthia, the news...

Smithsonian, continuing a policy set by the recently ousted potentaste, er, chairman, started charging for people to see a new display (butterfly room), which in itself is a boondoggle requiring weekly infusions of imported butterflies. You can look in for free, but exceopt for two days a week, it's five bucks to go in with them. This is per NPR.

The traditional distribution network for movies is under attack, sort of, by piracy and in-home Internet distribution. The element of gambling on each release has been reintroduced, but the sector most in danger (and best able to care for itself) is the administrative supertructure/executives sector. I see big movies being more and more financed by product placement and political action groups, while indies are be more competitive on the Internet venue...but how to get reimbursed?

MAybe a post about how movies of all sorts are financed would be in order? (Not me, here I'm a Major Ignoramus!).

Re: Welcome back!
Hi Maj,  To answer your questions,

1. There is certainly a lot of confusion in the industry, but most indie filmmakers are empowered (I'm getting to hate that buzz word) by the possibilities to reach a much wider audience. For our company the web and video on line has only been good news...

2. I didn't get a chance to keep up with the news...Tell me what you are referring to at the Smithsonian???

Welcome back!

1. How is the free-for-all of media distribtion via the Internet affecting independent documentary movie makers (versus commercial moviemakers?).

2. Hey, how about that Smithsonian THIS week?
