You see the problem then, Gramsci, with a runaway and uncontrolled
executive branch.  Our president isn't supposed to have such powers.  The problem is that nobody is holding the bastard accountable, including the people who stand the most to gain by doing it.  It was one thing when the Republicans toadied to him, but the Democrats simply allowing the administration to continue until it leaves in 2009 without so much as a federal probe against the worst and constitutionally abusive president in history?  The Democrats should be ashamed...

It seems that you can't 'take the government back' until you rearrange the various political instruments. As I'm sure you know, there are not many developed democracies that have a President who can overrule an elected congress. There's a few Presidents floating around - but they usually have honourary or severely limited powers. Even Chirac has to bow to his parliament on most issues.
