Re: AINT NO DO GOODER DOING THIS -- IT'S SAVING TAXPAYER MONEY
Thank you for your comment. This occured during the Carter administrator. Did not know he was so much for less government. I did not say in any place that they should not have care, they need that with good staff and medication and the permission of the staff to give the meds if they need them.

AINT NO DO GOODER DOING THIS -- IT'S SAVING TAXPAYER MONEY
it's not as expensive to throw a prescription at somebody as it is to give him/her care and have a medical staff available -- one good prescription saves the salaries and benefits of a dozen people.
you wanted less government spending -- and you get it.

Re: But this guy.......
Corbing Dallas that is just it. It is all convoluted so we don't know from what. He should have been reported. He should have been kept. He should have had his records made public. They aren't protected nor is the public protected from them. He would have been better protected away from innocent people. Then the next thing to work out is where the line is to be drawn in putting them away. We have problems in the system. Thanks CD

Re: JM
I am sorry Mary that he was not away from the reach of danger. The danger may have been another one who needed to be away from the general public and is still out there.

But this guy.......
wasn't one of the classic released homeless mentally ill wandering about.....he was a student.
The issue for me is the pervasive way privacy laws have been changed to protect the "mentally" ill.......his parents weren't even notified.....we want to force drunk drivers to have special license plates or sex offenders to register publically....but potential murders are protected???

Well said. In FL, JM's sister was trying to get the, (don't know how to spell it) Marchman Act in place for JM and if that didn't work the, 'Baker Act'. Unfortunately the process took too long. --Joy!Mary

You have a good take on it, and it's the same here unless a person is criminally insane I think. It's very sad what we've done with the countrys, here and there luv.

This is very informative. It is generalized. We still have the issues of those who believe they are well and refuse to take their meds, are stronger than their often elderly parents. Love them as one may, how do we insure them safety and care together with inforced proper medication without proper facilities with care that is checked properly? Often one or both parents leave them to themselves from what I can find out. There is the thing of the death of one or both parents and the child is healthy and does not know what to do? Thank you for this link.

Here is a very informative site on mental illness. Everyone should know as much as possible about this because mental illness effects 1 in 5 families in one way or another.

I believe as you do...the mentally ill would be better served with assistance then with homelessness..I can vaguely remember the law back in 70, but I do remember thinking what a crock...

Re: Masky
Thanks I didn't know that(calender thing). I agree totally. Our policicans accept anything based on whether it is politically correct. That has to stop. These are people we are talking about on both ends those who kill, those who don't and those who are victims - actually both are. They need mandated excellent care. Thanks for your comment.

Justi...
I'm not sure if it's my computer or yours, but this particular post has the words going across the entire width of the page, which requires me to arrow over to read it. It makes me dizzy to read. Thought I'd give you a heads up incase you changed the formatting.
I'm not sure what the answer is, because it seems we've become a society who accepts "average" in regard to one too many things. Average care (or in most cases, less than average care) is not acceptable when dealing with the mentally ill in or out of an institutional setting.
My greatest concern is for individuals who are allowed to roam our streets and cities without structured care or without regard for the individual's well being and the well being of those he/she comes into contact with. Look at the Virginia Tech slayings. An answer? America needs to quit accepting "average" and expect/command/demand better!
