---Masky--- I'm sorry but I cannot agree with some of your comment
When you say this: "I, personally, hold parents accountable for paying attention to where their children are going and what they are doing while on the internet." . . . absolutely; the greatest amount of responsibility lies with the parents but this fact does not exempt other members of society from their responsibilities. As adults we are obligated through a broader spectrum of social responsibility to not make adult oriented or unsuitable material available to children.
In regards to self monitoring, it is only yourself that needs to be pleased.

Edna_P - I can vouch for that reality - I've spent some time in the public
blogasphere but eventually came cowering back to Blogit.
Ultimately, public domain has no controls whatsoever while at the same time providing a sense of complete anonymity for anyone wanting to comment. I use the term "sense of" because people are nowhere near as anonymous as they think they are while online, a relatively low level of technical competence can root out and locate most internet users.
In my syndicated blog "Web Raisins" I was talking about web site authoring, tips, tricks and advice, as well as providing links to free stuff. In other words; as innocuous as a blog can be. If I wasn't receiving insulting, idiotic or malicious comments, I was being spammed. Sometimes with "set and forget" software that would leave a comment automatically every ten minutes. It inevitably became a waste of time to publish the blog, as far too much time was spent dealing with this crap. Blogit is a very well managed site in this regard. Private membership and the diligence of this site's managers makes this a very pleasant and useable forum in comparison to other alternatives.

NPR
had a story last week on websites that shut down or stopped accepting comments because people don't know where to draw the line. They had an example of a lady who posted a seemingly harmless blog and received photoshopped pictures of herself as a mutilated body. Congress is discussing regulations.

Gome...
Of course there are going to be children who land on the first several lines of our post, as well as, the title we use for our posts. I, personally, hold parents accountable for paying attention to where their children are going and what they are doing while on the internet. That's just the way I handle my own kids, as kids can't always be trusted to do what you tell them.
In regard to self-monitoring here...well, there's one too many people to please at all levels. I write to attract those whose personality is like mine. I write to interact with those who can laugh at themselves first and others last. I do take the opportunity to break outside my shell and communite with individuals who have a higher moral standard than me and can't talk about different issues, but all in all, I write in the moment. It offends some people, but then I connect with others!

Tonyzonit - self-censorship in a free society is a responsibility of that
freedom.
We are all free to set our own standards. Where I am sometimes accused of being prudish and just as often of being old fashioned, we also have the freedom to set a higher standard for ourselves than for society. Ultimately, the influence on society from these standards will be minimal but not entirely without effect. It's the not judging others part of this that trips up most people.

Hi Gome - self-censorship in a free society is part of the fun of writing.
To occasionally be a bit naughty as you have been today, but to voluntarily keep to good standards as we see them. of course, people have different standards, so i suppose evryone self-censors but some censor next to nothing. They often attract large audiences! I'm not particulalrly thinking of anyone here, but certainly in the entertainment world, shocking is a common means to achieve wealth and fame.
