@ Saul realtive

I was in fact referring to Charlemagne and how he united Europe, albiet in rather violent ways,as one common Christian community.

Turkey should be denied adimssion to the EU not only for its radical time bomb but for other tangible things as well....while in the western world it is "conceivable" (though it is banned in the EU) to sentence someone to the death penalty for horrendous crimes (and I for one believe in the death penalty for pedophiles and child molestors) in Turkey you can risk capital punishment for smuggling drugs. OK, it is a serious crime, but to kill someone for that? Again, I love the history and culture of Turkey, but it should just stay a non-EU country.

I hate to correct you, New Yorker, but Europe was not founded on
christian beliefs.  Christianity was adopted by Europe, beginning about 1700 odd years ago.  Before that, Europe was paganistic, polytheistic, animistic, pantheistic, or any number of -istics you want to throw in there.  Still, the point must be made that while Islam may be a tolerant religion, radical Islam, which is practiced by an estimated 200 million Muslims, is not.  Once territory is made Muslim, it is always considered Muslim.  That would be like Spain still claiming hegemony over, say, South America.  Once theirs, always theirs.  This is a ridiculous viewpoint, but one which the extremists adhere to.  And it is dangerous.  But, as was commented earlier, how do you reconcile Europe's position of religious tolerance while denying Turkey admission into the EU on grounds of its growing radical populaltion?

I had not seen this post......
It is true that there are extremists in all religions......always has been and probably always will be.......but one has to be blind not to focus on our current period of time and see that the threat to Western Civilization is  coming from one segment, affiliated with one religion.  The segment is made up of  Islamists, Jihadists, Islamo-fascists.....whatever label you want to attach to them and the religion is Islam.

We need the "moderate",  "educated", Muslim population to step up and say enough is enough.  Until that happens the violence is only going to increase.........right now their failure to act lends one to wonder if their is not a subtle concurrence with the events exploding around us on a daily basis.

Interesting post.  There are extremists of all religions that for some reason are filled with hatred and have a bent toward violence.  I don't think it is the religion that makes them that way.  I think they use the religion as an excuse, as a front for their extreme activities.

Should They?

We live in a complex world. It gets more complex each day. Unfortunately, the participants of this world, who expose themselves to knowledge, in an unbiased way, will not be unable to understand the intolerance which exists.

Religion, all faiths for that matter, take on cultish overtones. Adherents accept with blind faith the dogma of the teachings. They are indoctrinated from birth, hence it is nigh impossible to correct their myopia.Yes some dogma result in greater harm than others.

Whether Turkey should get into the European Union should depend on whether they meet the criteria to be accepted. Perhaps, they NEVER will. Yet religion should not be one of the criteria. That would set a dangerous and uncontrollable precedent.

Good post

Afzal

I know all too well that Islam does not preach violence. It is sad that a handful of extremists interpret things to their convenience and completely distort - and destroy - the message of Islam.

I'm not being a bigot because I live in a place - Sicily - where the Arabs introduced religious tolerance. All I ask is, why don't heads of state who are Muslim and Imams around the world put a stop to it?

I am very sorry to learn about the gory incident.
Islam does not preach taking of innocent human lives but some misguided people are bringing bad name to Islam and Muslims .

Here is a quote from The Holy Quran which I would like to share with you .

Surha -As-Shura -42 Ayat 42

" The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress mankind and wrongfully rebel in earth. For such there is a painful doom."

I don't understand how these criminals can call themselves Mulims in the light of the teachings of the Holy Quran.
