Tonyzonit - that's it - "...that they have suffered at the hands of . life"
It's a losers club mentality, that as you allude to, has been adopted by countless groups, so many times throughout history. Yet they refuse to see this.

The disciples, who actually knew jesus, were led by him to believe
that the end of the world was imminent THEN. So Jesus was as wrong about this as people are today. There have also been numerous other would-be messiahs, including a spate of them in Renaissance era Germany! And what about the founder of the Mormons, and Sun Myung Moon, and the Waco cult, and the Jonestown nonsense? Similar personality cults existed around lenin, Stalin and Mao, but with the millennial theme taken out. Some more evil than others, maybe, but all, as you say, examples of insanity, of sheeplike timid and resentful, vengeful minds grouping behind a strong powerful vengeful figure who claims he willright the wrongs they have suffered at the hands of ... life.

Yes
As I wrote in my own blog, predictions of the world's ultimate demise, by Christians or anyone else, have one thing in common: failure.
