There is no simple answer
The reasons will be as varied as the people who ask them. Some may be angry. Some may be looking to "prove" their position. Some simply enjoy the exchange of ideals and knowledge. One may as well ask why
you are asking these questions, except that you have already said. And maybe, like you, some of them just want to learn.

This is an interesting post. I have encountered friends ( I wouldn't address them as atheist ) who are non-believers asking me about Christianity. I take it that they are interested in Christianity so I try my best to tell them as much as I can and aslo invite them to go to church with me. I feel this is the best way to educate them and to win their hearts rather than argue with them on what they believe or disbelieve. And I do have good results.
