We have talked about homeschooling as a very real option
We'll see where we're at when it comes time

Okay, the lack of medical care is a problem...

I can see that. But if you are worried about his education, dude, HOMESCHOOL him. He will get a better education than nearly any public school or private school would provide; he will learn to think and reason, rather than just reciting back a bunch of facts; and you could tailor his curriculum to his interests and needs. If he's verbally gifted but mathematically challenged, you could address that. Traditional schools don't have the manpower.

You could teach him two or three foreign languages, where public schools provide fewer options and don't do a very good job of them. (A friend of mine majored in Spanish in high school and continued that major at a nationally recognized university. She graduated with honours, but when she went to Spain and to Mexico after ten years of Spanish-language study, no one could understand her, and she could barely understand the natives. So yeah, I'm kind of down on public school language instruction.)

There are SO many resources, like the Robinson curriculum, the Advantage software ... there's no reason that an intelligent and inquisitive guy like you couldn't give his son an education that would make Ivy League schools drool over him.

Sports ... that's another thing entirely. Do you have a local church that could give him opportunities? My homeschooled boys play on our church's basketball, baseball, and soccer teams.

I'm telling you now, if my family were not all here in Memphis, I'd pack up and move to Wendover tomorrow. It sounds lovely. I'd hate for you to have to leave just because you weren't confident about your son's opportunities.

Ben, they have no expectations whatsoever here
And many times, you get just what you expect . . . nothing.

In this neck of the woods...
They expect the kids to come into kindergarten knowing their ABCs and certain other basic information. Yes, we have a significant Mexican population here, but all the kids go to Head Start out here (equivalent to day care for wealthier families) so the kids all learn their ABCs, and do pre-reading and pre-math and other things there. They don't have to start the kids out in kindergarten with their ABCs, shapes, colors, and all that other "stuff" considered more appropriate for preschool anymore.

There aren't many opportunities for Trey at that level either
I want him to have access to sports or other after school activities if he wants.

My sister moved...
her family in from the bush of Alaska into Fairbanks.  Why?   Because of the kids.  Gradeschool was fine, but she wanted them to have more opportunities and with so little to do in the bush, alcoholism and suicide are epidemic.  It's been hard on her and her husband, but the kids are flourishing and I don't think they regret it for as second... just wish they had more time and money.

afzal, I can't really blame him because it's my choice
in doing what I think is best for him

SW, you might as well make the most of blaming him for a few things

while you can. It won't be long, after all, before he'll be blaming you for EVERYTHING! (Including global warming and the homework he forgot to do.)

Love will conquer all though.
