it was odd in 1961
living in very primitive conditions -- a lot of people in rural america did -- then hearing over the high school intercom the radio broadcast of Alan Shepard's 15 minutes in space.
quite a contrast.

reminds me of my time on the farm 1961 - 1964
first house -- oly electricity -- no running water -- drew water with a bucket from a well my great-grandfather dug.
heated with wood, cooked with wood and LP gas.
bathed in a dishpan.
the other house the well was hand operated pump type -- drilled about a hundred feet down with the pm itself down to about 16 (32?0 ft above the water -- had to bring the whole thing up one time to repair the rubber gaskets. -- took a whole lot of pumping to get the first water in the bucket. we built ourselves a new outhouse out of wood slats.
best time of my life.
