Jaahda - there is a bit more to domain name speculation than guessing what
others might want in a name but that is the basic premise.
I tend to look for domain names that are short, catchy, easily communicated verbally (important for radio advertising or telephone communication) and if they have been previously registered; have some residual web traffic from the efforts of the former owners. Here is an example: addfox.com it was the domain name of a now defunct online forum which had several hundred members. Aside from being a catchy and easily memorable 6 letter domain name, it still generates web traffic every month. I paid $10 for it as an expired domain name, it has generated $58 in PPC revenue so far in the 7 months that I have owned it. Not all speculative purchases work out this way however, some names end up being turkeys. Pruning the deadwood from the inventory is necessary every once in awhile . . . hence my offer to give Godisfree.com to anyone who wants it. I'm going to let it expire anyways.

Jaahda - preying on the misfortune of others?
How is the penny ante speculation that I am talking about here preying on the misfortune of others? The example you give of someone scooping up your expired name specific domain name and offering it to you for sale at a profit is marginally reprehensible but not all speculative efforts need be that sleazy.
