I wanted to comment on what bel said...
She's right about that... people who set up our phone service, our movers, whoever, when they find out my husband is a Marine say to me to tell him thank you.  When my Dad met him, he grabbed his hand with a big cowboy handshake (my Dad's a west Texas man like Bush) and said, thank you son.  I used to say it to people, too, still do.. but before I met Eddie.  Then one day, we kept getting this thing in the mail for a package for Eddie.  Finally, he picked it up.  The post office said it was for a different name (or it wasn't clear who it was for exactly, just our apartment number), and we live next to Miramar Air Station (Eddie is stationed at Camp Pendleton) so it could have been for another Marine, but for some reason they gave it to Eddie anyway because they had no return address.  You wouldn't think the post office would do that since they always ask for ID.  I opened it and it was a hand-carved wooden angel with delicate little wiring coming out that said, "thank you."  It's beautiful.  It was right after we moved into this apartment and everyone that set up services said to thank my husband for his service.. then that comes.  No tag, return address, doesn't say who it's from or to... just "thank you."  Neat, I think.

Thanks so much for posting this. It made me cry.
None of the Marines at Camp Pendleton come home to anything, unless they have family there... and most of them don't.  They wait to see them until they go home on post-deployment leave.  They get off the plane, ride a bus 40 minutes to base where maybe a few people are.. maybe a few were at the airport.  My husband had no one to greet him home for either tour to Iraq (we hadn't met yet). I always wondered if this war was, in the beginning, accepted, where was the parade?  Even if we don't believe in the government's positions, it's like the Marines say, "It ain't about politics."  We should always treat our troops coming home from combat with some big welcome home, no matter what.  For them, sometimes, the war never ends.  Recently, a friend came home to find he doesn't get a year now due to the surge and he has to go back.  it's his fourth tour.  My husband is injured (shoulder, not serious) and can't deploy, fortunately for me. I'm going to see if someone does this here, start it, call the USO.  It's like my husband said, he joined for love of country and he didn't get to pick where that took him... but he still loves his country and he'd do it all again. Thanks again, Semper Fi. :)

Bel.....Whenever I am someplace and see someone in uniform....
I make it a point of thanking them for serving their country.......and shaking their hand....

I wish everyone could understand
how much a handshake and a thank you means to these soldiers.  These soldiers don't ask for thanks and they are often embarrassed by the attention but it means the world to them that someone cares enough to take a second to thank them.  Don't ever let a man or woman in a uniform pass you by without saying thank you.  Believe me that one second of your time will have an impression for the lifetime of those troops.

This was sent to me in an email!!!    It brought tears to my eyes...all the Vietnam Vets who come out to show support and welcome them home when they received no support or welcome homes themselves!
