I recently had a dinner conversation with a gentleman I'd just met, SW,

and I told him the same thing: that I just wanted people to think, not to follow anything blindly. As for Doomsday, like the good American I am, I have become desensitized to it, since every other day some religious nutcase -- Christian, Muslim, Mayan throwback, or toad worshiper -- has found the true date of the end through reading planetary alignments, interpreting the bible or koran, or the accumulated droppings of the rare blue iguana. Doomsday is what you make it, I say. I make it a day of celebration, all of them we've survived and will survive.

How's that fill your coffer?

I think doomsday is a concept that can be used to control people - as in, "do as I say, or on the last day of time, the Cosmic Cop in the Sky is going to get you - put you in Hell."
