missjohn, it depends on how tricklish you want to go
My wife and I have our wages and I have a couple of sources that bring in $100-$300 a month, and then the rest are much, much less.  I am trying to build them up though.

How many trickles?

How many streams of income have you managed to establish so far? I only have two really: my wages and a very small monthly child support payment from my daughter's father (less than $100, he's a full-time grad student and is living off of college loans).

I was thinking that if I freelance one or two articles a month, it would really make a big difference. It would take the edge off my struggle. I've written for a newspaper before.

And then there's the idea of selling stuff on a website or Ebay. Haven't really looked into how one goes about either of those.

BTW, congratulations on your -$728 net worth. I can't see zero from where I am, maybe next year.

SuccessWarrior - yep - another thing that cannot be overlooked in

accumulating wealth is developing specific self disciplines.

Where we tend to focus on nurturing the income streams, and admittedly this is the most important aspect of creating wealth, keeping wealth is important as well. Monitering outflow, safeguarding against inflation and sometimes just doing without some of the things we want or can live without can be vital aspects.

Ben, exactly
Pick things that you want, that you'll enjoy, and the money will take care of itself.

Ain't that the truth!
And if you have the multiple streams of income (you get to pick what those streams are, contrary to whatever people like Robert Allen might insist on), you don't have to worry about what might happen if you get fired and your only income stream is that sole paycheck.
