Vardaman's child logic stuck with me. He says: "My fish is dead. My mother is dead. My mother is a fish."
I'm sure philosophers have a name for this logical fallacy, but that's beside the point. I think Faulkner was conveying the confusion felt by a child trying to make sense of his mom's death.

By the way, what job did he have while writing "Absalom, Absalom"? Was he being constantly interrupted?
