But you put your finger on the underlying issue, which is that if we are the World's only Superpower, then we must assume leadership in ALL areas. I understand even this can be argued, but I can think of no reason why we should not be at the pinnacle of everything we do.

This is fine, ArGee - although I would quibble with the statement
..that America's education system's rightful place is to be the best in the world. While it may be, or could be, it surely cannot be right to say that it MUST be. I hope, however, that it does indeed become one of the best in the world - it is vitally important that America continues to set a good example, being an economic and cultural superpower. But there is no quasi-divine right for America to be the best - this is reminiscent of the Israelites in the Old Testament feeling that they were God's chosen people!
