Thank you for commenting--and asking about the inspiration, for that matter. I never know how much to outright tell and keep hidden, so it's great to be asked, because I love to dissect poems and talk about how certain lines come from here or there or wherever.

So, the story this is based on--it's about a dream world. It's... not a dream, but not reality. The main character, Christian, every night when he goes to sleep, he dreams himself there, and time passes the same there as it does in the regular world. But if something happens in the dream, like he gets a cut on his hand or something, it doesn't stay with him when he wakes up. The place has it's own reality, but in dreaming, he doesn't completely enter it. Other people go to the place in their dreams every so often, too.

Most people think it's just a dream--he's one of the few who not only goes there every night, but he remembers the waking world when he's dreaming, and he remembers the dream world when he's awake. He meets someone there, and they fall in love. The one he meets, named Rhys--Rhys understands its a dream world, but there's too much separation between dream-Rhys and reality-Rhys, and so in the dream, Rhys doesn't remember reality.

Of course there is more to the plot, where there's this sort of evil stuff going on and an exploration of the beings that populate the dream world and stuff, and the dream world ends up being closed to humans for a variety of reasons.

That's where the poem comes from. Christian and Rhys find out the world will be closed to them in a few days, so it's the main character and Rhys talking. They're in love, but they won't be able to find each other in the real world, because neither of them know who Rhys really is in reality.

So, the poem is from Christians point of view, and this line:

I'm afraid I'll wake up,
and I won't know what I'm missing

That's Rhys talking, as is probably obvious now. Real-Rhys won't remember anything of what happened in the dream.

So if you re-read it I am sure you will see where a lot of it comes in now. As for the ruins, that's one of the magical places in the dreamworld that has to do with the beings that populate the world.

Aaaand there are a few more twists to the plot and stuff between Rhys and Christian but as it doesn't have much to do with the poem, I guess I will stop my rambling there. XDD Sorry that took so much explanation, I haven't worked on that story in a couple of years, so I guess I got all excited to talk about it.
