I would save the mother first because without the mother the child will be an orphan. The mother may grieve for her child, but she can always conceive another child.
Have you noticed how the flight attendants remind mothers to put the oxygen mask on themselves first and then their children?

I wouldn't help them
if it would endanger my life, because I have two kids to take care of. But, if I could help someone without causing myself fatal injury, I certainly would.

I'm not sure what you mean. Is your question grammatical? Is there a
typo that you could fix? Or am I just dense today?

Straightforward
Actually such acts are spontaneous and nobody can foretell as to what one would do when faced with such a situation. Thoughts are absent, and only the spirit takes over in times of great danger, and it is a superior decision than any mental thinking.

Straightforward,
I would save both if it were within my capacity to do so. But if no choice is given, then I would rather save the mother (because the mother can have another child.)

You're probably correct. One does whatever one does in such situations by
impulse

I need more details before I can answer...
A boyfriend once asked me what I would do if he and my mother were both in a pit with deadly snakes. There's no right answer to such a question.
