No, a file server is just a computer to give people access to shared files
It has nothing to do with the prevention of spyware or viruses, unless programmed to do so.; and only on a sharing basis.

I dont know but I have one that has the dual processor, I understand that keeps them cooler. I shut mine down today, but my son told me he thinks it hard on the computer to start and restart it all the time.

I leave mine on almost all the time
But I will reboot maybe once a week. I also built myself a file server, and I haven't shut it down in nearly 3 months.
And no, I don't catch any viruses or spyware or anything else.

I think it probably causes the fan motor to burn out more quickly
You know that little fan in the back that keeps the hard drive cool? I use a laptop so I always close everything and turn it off.
