Oh, the sweet wisdom of Margery Williams….   We all experience pain but it’s what we do with it that can make all the difference in the world (to our sense of self, that is).   If we learn from it, if it strengthens our character, if it enriches our compassion or sensitivity towards others, then the pain served a purpose.  If we simply let it get the best of us and put up additional barriers thinking insulating our self is necessary then the pain wins.

This is a wonderful post. I do believe it all depends on the level of reality you seek, how you will handle it while it is upon you, and what you will do with the experience after you have reached your reality. From a Christian perspective; God will not allow a storm to come into your life that He has not prepared an escape route from. The greatest reality I know is the storm I did not escape, nor go around but straight through and made myself available, should one want help in a similar situation. I have lots of scars from those sorts of pain and finely polished realities. God bless you.

It is a great book!  I love your perspective on this and while I hadn't thought about you are right for those who really haven't or won't allow themselves to face pain they are pretty well empty headed.

First of all, I love that book.
Second of all, I think that pain helps a person seem real and can help make him or her more interesting, depending on how they cope with the pain.  The few people whom I know who have never experienced any sort of emotional pain, struggle, or conflict (or physical pain great enough to cause any of the above; i.e., more than a scraped knee) seem hopelessy naive and juvenile, and I have never really been able to have a conversation with them about something that wasn't trivial.  Of course, people who have let their pain make them bitter are no fun to talk to either, because all they ever do is complain.  The people who have grown and learned from their pain are the people with whom I can talk for five hours without a moment of silence.

Very true Rumored
I would much rather have bypassed much of the pain that has happened in my life, but since I was handed it, I had to deal.

bel, I think we'd all like to escape pain, but it's just not possible
not in this lifetime....we can cope with it, but even that's hard to do..

i try to avoid pain but appreciate a day without it
i think that we need to experience all emotions and feelings during our lifetime to appreciate everything.  i would skip the physical pain though - my back hurts!!  nice post

I think the beauty lives inside the lesson!

I like your way of looking at it.  I have always wondered about the phrase "he was a beautiful tortured soul".  somehow we equate pain and struggle wiht beauty. I wonder why?

I love that one, too!  I think pain is a very important process to experience in order to reach realness.  As the saying goes:  What doesn't kill us makes us stronger!  I'm grateful to have experienced it all!  It's molded me!  Nice post!    Interesting!
